Summer Greetings!

We did indeed "fly away" from 30 East Main, Ft. Pierre, due to roof problems there that the landlord does not want to fix. I began searching for a new location in July but with rentals tightened up due to the flood relocations, it has been hard to find an ideal spot for a dance studio. A couple of locations of interest are not available at this time... one in Ft. Pierre and one in Pierre. Thanks to Brad and Erika Bruns for storing the studio belongings.

As I continue to look, it has become apparent to me that we may be looking at a late start in the fall, perhaps even October 1st. I can understand if you are not willing to wait to sign up your dancers this year and want to enroll them elsewhere.

We are planning to do Narnia April 19th & 20th, 2012, and have reserved Riggs Theater for that event. The word is that there will be no dance recitals in May at Riggs and they would not let me book either of the last 2 weekends in April either... "saving it for school events."

Some of the advanced dancer and I, ten in all, have not ceased to dance all summer. Because we had evacuated the studio May 27th, the day before our performance, we had to move our practices to New Life Assembly of God sanctuary. We are grateful to them and thank them for their kindness. We are getting worship dances ready for Awaken Worship Fest at Riggs Theater, Saturday, August 13th, from 6 to 10 pm.

We also performed "I'll Fly Away" at New Life Assembly in June and "In Christ Alone" in July.

Ms. Sunny and Jenna Goehring drove to Kansas City July 10 where they attended a week of dance classes at Dramatic Truth, Christian School of the Arts in Missouri. The teachers were wonderful as was the student performance at the end of the week.

Side benefits of the trip included a visit to IHOP's (International House of Prayer) worship center and a stopover in Concordia, KS, where we walked through the beautiful gardens of the Nazareth Convent and viewed the magnificent structure surrounded by bigger than life statues.

Emily Plumage attended classes at Ballet Magnificat in Jackson, MS, the entire month of July. She also attended a week of dance classes in Bismarck, ND, at Northern Plains Ballet.

We have had the privilege of having Jenna Goehring home this summer to instruct us in modern dance and choreograph a new worship piece to "Your Great Name." Thank you, Jenna.

Also, a thank you to Noreen Plumage for hosting a Narnia evening of viewing dance dvds and munchies at her house Sunday, July 31st, attended by upper level dance students.

You have turned for me my mourning into dance;

Welcome to (Almost) Neverland:

My dancers and I have been working to learn the choreography for "I'll Fly Away," a dance version of Neverland. It is just amazing at how many interpretations in dance and theater have been done of James Barrie's wonderful story. Here is what Wikipedia has to say about Peter Pan:
Peter Pan is a character created by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie (1860–1937). A mischievous boy who can fly and magically refuses to grow up, Peter Pan spends his never-ending childhood adventuring on the small island of Neverland as the leader of his gang the Lost Boys, interacting with mermaids, Indians, fairies, pirates, and (from time to time) meeting ordinary children from the world outside. In addition to two distinct works by Barrie, the character has been featured in a variety of media and merchandise, both adapting and expanding on Barrie's works.
I don't know if any of you have wondered how we put these stories in dance together but it is a creative process. Of course, I always have some idea of the main characters and some of the dances I want in a show. I have no idea of what steps I will be using, however, until we actually start learning dances. I teach the steps a small amount at a time and have to make notes to remember them unless I am teaching them from video. The steps and dances come easier after the costumes are ordered. Costumes actually help to determine the choreography. With acting and pantomime involved, I always have to try to figure out sets and props to help get that across.

Due to requests for having the performance earlier, we have moved it up to Saturday, May 28th, at 3 and 7 p.m. The only other weekend available in May was graduation weekend. I apologize to parents for this change and any conflicts that arise.

Happy New Year!

2010 has finally ended and what a year it was -- so much dancing and two shows only 8 months apart. WE DID IT! But only by the grace of God and I am so grateful for all he has done with the studio, in my life and in the lives of my family. At times when I looked ahead it didn't seem possible but when I looked at Jesus, it did.

I am also thankful to my dance students and their parents. You can't imagine how much you have blessed me with your dance progress and support. We couldn't do it without God but we couldn't do it without you either.

Thanks for all the gifts: Belgian chocolates, a dozen red & white roses, cds, books, jewelry, angels, cookies, lotions, gift card, stickers and hugs.

What's next? Well, we need to get back in shape and begin to work on our technique again. I'm sure no one is more aware of this than the advanced students as they observe their dancing on dvd. A serious dancer always looks for ways to improve.

Some of our dancers are considering attending Ballet Magnificat's summer dance workshop in June/July. It's not too early to get ready by saving money, applying or making travel plans. For those interested in the worship dance track (no training required) from July 9-17, the cost is about $1000 plus cost of travel to Jackson. For information go to http://www.balletmagnificat.com/

We will soon be ordering costumes for Peter Pan. There will be some extra costume fees. I will try to locate the least expensive costumes available that still keep the creative integrity of the show.

We will begin working on choreography in February using music selections from several sources including television, Broadway and movie versions.

Fall Happenings/Summer Follow Up:

Summer finished with a bang as MainStreet dancers participated in "The Awakening Music Fest" at Steamboat Park on a very hot Friday evening, August 20. Emily Plumage blessed us by teaching Way Down Deep to a group of 8 dancers. Way to go, Emily!

Happy Summer Everyone!

I hope you are having a blessed summer and getting time for a little rest and relaxation or at least a change in pace. The latter is the case for me and the studio as we moved into the biggest summer dance session ever MainStreet Dance after a highly successful performance of Hadassah, A Story of Esther April 24th.

Summer Rec classes had 27 enrollments in two levels of dance and Ms. Jenna's contemporary dance class had 8 students enrolled. Both sessions ran twice a week.

Abbey Nold and Mekell Rockwell performed How Beautiful for New Life AG church the first Sunday of June. Moving right on Emily Plumage, Mekell Rockwell, Josh and Sarah Easter, and Ms. Sunny performed In Christ Alone and Hail To The King June 23rd at Worship Without Walls in Steamboat Park. With the exception of Ms. Sunny, none of the dancers had ever performed outdoors so that was an exciting experience.

Ms. Sunny choreographed a music video/dance presentation for New Life AG's youth group that they performed during worship July 4th at New Life to Rachael Lampa's Day of Freedom. Jeb Brazelius, Abbey Nold, Kylie Varns, Mekell Rockwell, Josh and Sarah Easter, Brittany Faddoul, and Ms. Sunny performed this.

Emily Plumage flew to Jackson, MS July 3rd to participate in a two week workshop at Ballet Magnificat's studios and on Belhaven College Campus. Ms. Sunny flew down to join her July 14-16 to see her perform in the student performance, to take classes, and fly back with her.

Some of the MainStreet dancers and Ms. Sunny hope to attend a performance of C.S. Lewis' Four Loves presented by Academy of Dance Arts in Rapid City August 7.

Once again, MainStreet Dance is planning a holiday performance. This year's performance of  A Christmas Gift will be entirely new production and challenge. This will be a biblical adaptation for Nutcracker lovers with an entirely new twist on the story complete with a throne room where the nations come to dance for King Jesus and where he dances with His bride.

This will be a huge undertaking for us to get ready by December 12 which is Hanukkah, by the way. (God is smiling.) So parents GET YOUR KIDS ENROLLED THIS YEAR EARLY because costumes will be ordered in late September and once ordered, we will not be able to take new students until January.

In January we will begin preparing for Peter Pan for which we are looking for a June date once again at Riggs Theatre. This will give us breathing room between the winter and spring shows.

Peter Pan is a show Ms. Sunny did as a college student at University of Utah and which she has always wanted to set on her students. It offers a wealth of delightful music and childlike wonder and love of make believe as a group of children fly away to Never Never Land. Wouldn't we all like to do that at times? So put on your wings and come fly with us.

But I trust in you, O Lord; I say, "You are my God." My times are in your hands;    - Ps 31:14&15
